On Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th December, Duke’s of Dorchester is set to hold a spectacular sale of silver, jewellery and works of art. The thousand lot sale includes big names such as Cartier, Charles de Temple and Van Cleef and Arpel.

The star lot of the sale is set to be a pocket watch by acclaimed watch maker William Anthony. The lot is estimated at £40,000-£60,000, but Duke’s has previously sold another in the auction “Treasures from the Summer Palace” on 19th May 2011, for £160,420 - there is excitement building about where the hammer will fall.

Duke’s watch and clock specialist Deborah Doyle said: “William Anthony was reputed to have been one of the most expert watchmakers of his time and this very fine example of his work is no exception. Not only did William Anthony put his skill into the movement of a watch, he also applied exquisite detail to the exterior, decorating the reverse of many cases with large diamonds pearls and enamel.”

Anthony worked in Red Lion Street, St Johns Square, Clerkenwell, London in the late 18th century and specialised in watches for the Chinese market, where they today. This very fine example of his work was viewed at Dukes recent Asian Art auction and created quite a stir of excitement with international buyers.
