Internationally renowned Dorset artist to return to Duke’s

Following on from a hugely successful solo exhibition in 2017, Dorset based artist Julian Bailey is returning to Dorchester auction house Duke’s with a new selling exhibition ‘Recent Works in Oil and Gouache’, which will run in Duke’s Gallery from Monday 3^rd December 2018 for two weeks .

Julian’s new collection of paintings show Dorset at its most magical and enchanting. Painting in rich clear colour the oil paint comes to embody the light, warmth and space of this summer just passed.
At the centre of these paintings is the human figure, taking a moment out in our busy lives to reflect on the passing day.  Seen walking in the open, on the beach, or skimming stones off the coast, the figure gives scale and presence to all it encounters.
Included also to compliment this work is a small selection of new figurative portraits from the artists friends and family.

Julian Bailey lives with his family near Dorchester. Born in 1963, he had his first successful exhibition at Malvern Public Library when he was still at school.  He studied art at the Ruskin School while attending New College, Oxford and then went on to the Royal Academy Schools where he was awarded the Turner Gold Medal and later the Landseer Scholarship.

He had his first one-man show in London in 1991 and has exhibited regularly since, joining Browse & Darby in Cork Street in 1999 as their youngest artist. He and his family moved to Dorset in 1998 when Julian began to paint landscapes, particularly the Dorset coast. In 2011 he was elected to join the New English Art Club and awarded the David Messum Prize. He also won the Manya Igel prize that year. His work is in numerous collections including HRH The Prince of Wales, New College Oxford, Pembroke College Oxford, Reed Executive, Old Mutual Assurance, Daiwa Bank, SG Warburg and more.

From beginning to finish, his work is a process; refined, destroyed and re-created until a solution is defined, resulting most recently in observational displays of groups of people meeting one another, mainly of those in bar and café society. Current and contemporary, Julian’s work portrays the figure in a youthful way, representing their associations through exaggerated form. From his depictions of people to his Loggia and courtyard compositions, Julian demonstrates a fine example of the link between form, colour and space in paint.
