A Life Size Meissen Goat

This charming Billy goat is featured in the Autumn Fine Art sale on the 8th of October. The life size Meissen model is after those by Johann Joachim Kändler, and stands at 58 cm high. 

JJ Kändler was a German late Baroque sculptor who was a major innovator in European porcelain sculpture. Scarcely a palace in Europe did not contain Meissen figurines, dinner sets, vases, or other works of the Kändler period.

Provenance: Baron van Tuyll, March Court. Literature: In Wittwer “Die Galerie der Meissen Teire”, published Munich 2004, the author lists four examples modelled by JJ Kändler between 1732 and 1736, including two in the Zwinger, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Art in Philadelphia, USA.
